When a second opinion on an MRI is worth it

A second read is useful when surgery is proposed, the report and your symptoms do not match, or the images are hard to interpret.

When a second opinion on an MRI is worth it

The images and the report are separate

You can ask another radiologist to read the same images. You do not always need another scan. A useful second opinion starts with the original DICOM images, not only the PDF report or a photo of a screen.

Situations where it helps

  • Surgery or an injection has been recommended and you want that confirmed.
  • The report says “normal” but your symptoms are severe or getting worse.
  • The first scan was done on an older scanner, or without the sequence your specialist expected.
  • An incidental finding is being used to justify a large extra investigation.

What to send

Ask the first clinic for the images on disc or a download link, plus the full report. A second clinic can often review them without repeating the scan. If the protocol was wrong for the question, a repeat scan may still be the right next step. That decision belongs to the radiologist, not to a comparison website.
