How Long Does an MRI Take?

In the scanner

A knee, a brain or a lumbar spine study is often 15–40 minutes of scanning. You are in the department longer than that: changing, the safety form, and getting the images checked before you leave.

What makes it longer

  • More than one body region.
  • Contrast, which adds an injection and extra sequences.
  • A repeated sequence if you moved.
  • A whole-body protocol, which is often 45–90 minutes depending on the scanner.

The booking length the clinic gives you is the one to trust. A forum average is not your appointment.
