What to Bring to an MRI

Papers

  • The referral or the booking confirmation, and a photo ID if the clinic asks for one.
  • Implant cards for pacemakers, stimulators, joints or stents.
  • A short list of operations and of medicines, including patches.
  • Recent kidney blood tests if contrast is planned and you have kidney disease.

What you wear

Clothes without zips, metal buttons or glitter are ideal. Many clinics give you a gown anyway. Remove jewellery, watches, hearing aids and medication patches that contain metal. Lockers are usual, but it is easier to leave cards and phones with whoever brought you.

Comfort

The room is cool and the table is firm. Ask for a blanket and for ear protection before the first sequence, not after. If you need a break, agree a signal with the radiographer. They can hear you.
