What to Wear for an MRI

Wear clothes without metal, or expect to change into a gown. Leave jewellery, watches and glitter fabrics at home.

Clothing

Jogging bottoms and a plain T-shirt are ideal if they have no zip, metal button, underwire or glitter thread. Sportswear with a hidden metal fibre has delayed scans often enough that many clinics gown everyone.

Take off

  • Jewellery, watches, hair clips and piercings you can remove.
  • Hearing aids, unless staff tell you a specific aid can stay outside the room.
  • Medication patches and nicotine patches. Some contain metal or can heat.
  • Heavy eye makeup if the clinic asks. Some pigments contain metal.

You will have a locker. Bring as little as you can. The magnet is always on, including in the room you walk into.
