Neck MRI: cervical discs, arm pain and when it is urgent

Neck MRI: cervical discs, arm pain and when it is urgent

What the scan is for

A cervical spine MRI shows the discs, the canal where the spinal cord sits, and the openings where nerves leave toward the arm. It is requested for arm pain with numbness, a suspected disc herniation, or spinal cord symptoms.

Urgent symptoms

Book a routine MRI only after a doctor has assessed you. Sudden weakness, a band of numbness around the trunk, new trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control can be an emergency. Those symptoms need same-day medical care, not the next private appointment.

What the pictures do not decide

Disc bulges on neck MRI are common with age, including in people with no pain. A bulge on the report is not automatically the cause of your symptoms and not automatically a reason for surgery. Physiotherapy, medication and time are often the first plan. Surgery is a decision based on the examination plus the images.
